Interview Questions
What type of music do you like most?
I really only listen to jazz. Older jazz, like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker.
What time is bedtime?
I rarely sleep. I’m kind of an insomniac. I spend most nights writing, or else I’m thinking and planning. And even when I’m not busy, I often find myself unable to fall asleep. So I guess bedtime is whenever my body decides it’s time to rest.
Who are your favorite writers?
JD Salinger is up there, for how many changes he made to the form of the young adult novel. I’m a big fan of Marcel Proust, a lot of the classics like Steinbeck and Harper Lee. Fitzgerald is a two-bit hack who stole all his best work from his wife. James Joyce. William Faulkner has a brilliance that I don’t think anyone will ever match. And in terms of more contemporary stuff, Truman Capote, John Updike, Norman Mailer… And I’ve read everything Chuck Palahnuik has ever written.
What do you most value in your friends?
Trust, loyalty, humor, and…wit and intelligence. If you can’t hold a conversation with me, we won’t be friends. Chris is good at that. And I need to know I can trust you… That’s a big thing for me.
Is the glass half-empty or half-full?
Half-empty. Obviously I already drank half of it, which means half of it is gone. It’s half-empty. It isn’t half-full. Why the hell would I only fill a glass halfway? If I were smart, I’d fill the damn thing all the way and then just drink it slowly. And if I did fill it only halfway and then I drank half, guess what? People obsess over this half-empty/half-full glass thing. It’s ridiculous. Of course it’s half-empty. That doesn’t necessarily have to be such a negative thing. It’s not as if you can’t pour more water.
